Nollywood produces thousands of films every year — more than almost any film industry on earth. Yet discovering quality titles remains one of the most frustrating parts of being a Nollywood viewer. Most audiences rely on scattered YouTube uploads, poorly organised platforms, or word of mouth to find something worth watching.
Good films are buried under quantity. Audiences spend more time searching than watching. And the industry keeps producing at a pace that makes the problem worse, not better.
How do you design for a catalogue that produces more films in a year than one person can watch in a decade?
The timing matters too. Streaming is now the default, and African viewers — on the continent and in the diaspora — increasingly pay for platforms that respect their time. Nollywood platforms rarely match the product sophistication those audiences expect. That gap is the opening Noilio was built to close.

Before designing anything, I spent time understanding how Nollywood audiences actually find films today — because the gap isn't content, it's context. I looked at existing platforms (IROKOtv, Showmax's Nollywood catalogue, Netflix's Naija row, the long tail of YouTube), at how audiences in Lagos and the diaspora surface films, and at how those platforms structure what gets featured and what stays buried.
Discovery happens off-platform. The decision of whatto watch is usually made in a WhatsApp chat or an X thread. Platforms that don't solve the "I don't know what to watch" moment lose users back to social.
Posters do the heavy lifting. Viewers scan by visual first, title second, synopsis rarely. Strong poster hierarchy is the difference between a film getting opened and scrolled past.
Freshness is a return trigger. Nollywood viewers actively look for new. Platforms that don't signal newness lose weekly return visits.

Decision 01 — Curated homepage over a flat grid. Maximum catalogue exposure (a giant grid) versus curated sections that guide the viewer. I organised the homepage into curated rows — spotlight titles, category rails, featured banners — instead of a flat grid. A grid treats every film as equal; a curated row says start here. Some catalogue depth hides deeper until search and filtering mature.
Decision 02 — Editorial curation over algorithmic recommendation. The first version is editorially driven — spotlights, banners, and featured categories controlled by hand through the admin dashboard. No "because you watched" rows. Recommendation engines need scale to work; editorial curation solves the cold-start problem and gives the platform a point of view from the first session.
Decision 03 — Some films get more real estate than others. Spotlight sections and banner placements give selected films disproportionate weight on the homepage. A flat homepage is fair but forgettable. Promotion has to be refreshed regularly — a banner that hasn't changed in a month tells users the platform is stale.

What worked: Making discovery the central problem clarified nearly every product decision. What I'd change: Future iterations need stronger recommendation systems layered on the editorial foundation. What I took forward: Discovery is the real product in any content platform — everything else is the price of entry.
